Some passports afford their bearers more freedom than others. On Tuesday,
Japan was once again named the country with the world's most powerful passport by the
Henley Passport Index. The latest addition to the travel list came in 2019: Since then,
Brazil grants Japanese citizens visa-free access, meaning Japanese passport holders have visa-free access or visa-on-arrival access to an impressive 191 countries. Another Asian nation, Singapore, is in second place with 190 destinations. South Korea and Germany follow with visa-free travel to 189 jurisdictions. French, Finnish, Luxembourgian and Italian passports come next with access to 188 countries without a prearranged visa.
Even though the United States is further down the ranking, the American passport still yields considerable power. U.S. passport holders can travel to 185 countries without major restrictions. That's a level of freedom also enjoyed by citizens in Norway, Belgium, Switzerland and
the United Kingdom.
