hub

As Pornhub withdraws from Florida in response to new age verification laws, the implications of this decision extend well beyond the Sunshine State. The legislation which is designed to prevent minors from accessing adult content has sparked similar actions in other states and prompted users to seek alternative means of accessing their favorite sites: individuals are turning to VPNs like NordVPN (from $2.99/month, 30-day money-back guarantee) to unblock Pornhub and maintain their access to adult content.

While the intent behind these laws is commendable, the execution often leads to unintended consequences for adult users. States like Louisiana, Nebraska and Texas have enacted stringent regulations that restrict access to adult websites and created a patchwork of laws across the country.

Pornhub Bans Florida

As these laws proliferate, many users have discovered that using a VPN is an effective solution to unblock and access Pornhub. A VPN works by masking a user’s IP address and encrypting their internet traffic and allows them to appear as though they are browsing from a different location—one where access to Pornhub is still permitted. Among the various options available, NordVPN is probably the most popular choice in the United States today for those looking to bypass these restrictions.

The process of unblocking Pornhub using a VPN is straightforward: Users simply need to sign up for a VPN service, download the application on their device (laptop, mobile, tablet, Smart TV, and more), and connect to a server located in a region where Pornhub remains accessible. Once connected, they can visit the site as usual and enjoy uninterrupted access.

Critics of age verification laws argue that they infringe upon personal freedoms and privacy rights: Alison Boden, Executive Director of the Free Speech Coalition, has expressed concerns over how these regulations could lead to overreach and surveillance of individuals: “These laws create a substantial burden on adults who want to access legal sites without fear of surveillance. Despite the claims of the proponents, HB3 is not the same as showing an ID at a liquor store. It is invasive and carries significant risk to privacy”.

As more states consider similar measures, the reliance on VPNs like NordVPNwill likely continue to grow among users who refuse to be limited by legislative actions that they view as unnecessary.

How Couples Met

1995 How Couples Met You will find more infographics at Statista Today’s daters are taking matters into their own hands. Seemingly no longer satisfied with the potential partners that life throws at them at work, in school and in their circle of friends, an increasingly large number of heterosexual daters is opting to meet their partner online. Surveys carried out and analyzed by Stanford University show that between 1995 and 2017 the number of heterosexuals who met their partner on the internet rose sharply from 2 percent to 39 percent. With the help of dating apps like Tinder and eHarmony, but also through social networking sites like Facebook, daters reconnected with old friends and acquaintances (8 percent of couples who met online), were introduced to someone (11 percent) or – in the majority of cases – met someone completely new on their own (81 percent).

The authors of the survey concluded that the main draw of looking for a stranger online was a larger set of choices than when leveraging friends and family, which was especially useful when “searching for something unusual or hard‐to‐find.“ In a similar vein, meeting your partner in a bar or restaurant was also on the rise between 1995 and 2017.

Stanford researchers excluded homosexuals from their analysis because they constitute a minority sexual orientation, making meeting someone online a more obvious choice for them than for heterosexuals. These were usually in a “thick dating market” (quote from Stanford) and therefore normally also able to identify several potential mates in their offline lives, according to the research.

The rise of the remote husband

Alice Fulwood
Wall Street correspondent

Earlier this year, over dinner, a friend was recounting his sister’s experience with the “match”—the programme that pairs graduating medical students in America with hospital jobs. This somewhat random process is often fraught for couples, but not for her and her husband. They would have been happy with almost any location, as her husband works remotely for a tech firm. I was reminded of my sister-in-law and her programmer husband, who upped sticks from California to enable her to attend Harvard Law School. I soon found couples with the same story cropping up everywhere. She was a doctor, lawyer or academic—her job tied to a place—who found it easy to chase her career wherever it led, because his work was “remote”.

Why is this? Men disproportionately hold tech jobs; tech jobs are disproportionately remote. Both these facts could easily be perceived as evidence of women getting the short straw. Getting women into science and tech jobs has long been a goal of feminists. Claudia Goldin, the brilliant winner of last year’s Nobel prize in economics, has shown that women’s participation in the labour force is higher when they can work remotely. Still, when considered in the context of couples, they lead to a more surprising conclusion: the geographic liberation of men greatly benefits their wives.

to be precise

More Americans are getting news on TikTok, bucking the trend seen on most other social media sites

BY KATERINA EVA MATSA

A small but growing share of U.S. adults say they regularly get news on TikTok. This is in contrast with many other social media sites, where news consumption has either declined or stayed about the same in recent years.
In just three years, the share of U.S. adults who say they regularly get news from TikTok has more than quadrupled, from 3% in 2020 to 14% in 2023.

TikTok, primarily known for short-form video sharing, has become especially popular among teens – two-thirds of whom report ever using the platform – as well as young adults.

How we did this

Among adults, those ages 18 to 29 are most likely to say they regularly get news on TikTok. About a third of Americans in this age group (32%) say they regularly get news there, a higher share than in years before. This compares with 15% of those ages 30 to 49, 7% of those 50 to 64 and just 3% of those 65 and older.

More of TikTok’s U.S. adult users are getting news there as well. Currently, 43% of TikTok users say they regularly get news on the site, up from 33% who said the same in 2022. TikTok users are now just as likely to get news from TikTok as Facebook users are to get news from Facebook. Still, TikTok users are less likely than users of X, formerly Twitter, to get news on the site.

Chrome's Rise to Browser Dominance

When Google announced the release of its own web browser Chrome in 2008, many people asked themselves why Google was building a web browser. In retrospect, the better question would have been, why Google hadn't built a web browser earlier. After all, the company's entire business was people using a browser to access Google's services.

As a matter of fact, the plan to make a Google web browser had existed for years, Google's CEO Eric Schmidt just hadn't considered his company ready to enter the resource draining 'browser wars'. By 2008, Google was making billions of dollars a year and had finally matured enough to go head to head with Microsoft and it's market dominating Internet Explorer.

15 years ago, on September 2, 2008, the first official release of Chrome was published and the open-source browser began its steady climb through the ranks. By the third quarter of 2009, Chrome had caught up with Apple's Safari and set its sights on the next contender: Firefox. It took a bit longer to catch up with Firefox, but in the fourth quarter of 2011, Chrome's share of global web browsing surpassed that of Firefox. Less than a year later, Chrome became the world's number one browser, overtaking Microsoft's Internet Explorer which had utterly dominated the market just five years earlier.

Remarkably, Chrome's ascent came almost entirely at the expense of Microsoft's browser. Since the third quarter of 2008, Internet Explorer's market share dropped from 68 to 25 percent, while Chrome's soared from zero to 43 percent. Today, Internet Explorer's successor, Edge, commands just 5 percent of the global market, while Chrome is sitting at the top of the pile with a slice of the pie consistently and securely above the 60 percent mark - the nearest competitor being Safari with 20 percent in August 2023.Chrome's Rise to Browser Dominance

iOS 17 Drops Support for iPhone 8 and X

While Apple's new line of smartphones won't be available until Friday, the latest version of its mobile operating system iOS is dropping today. With iOS 17, hundreds of millions of iPhone users get to enjoy a bunch of new features, even if they have no intention of switching to an iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro.

Like last year, when Apple cut the iPhone 6s, the first generation iPhone SE and the iPhone 7 from the list of devices compatible with iOS 16, some users will be left out in the cold, however, as iOS 17 will not support the iPhone 8 or iPhone X, both released in 2017. That means users will need an iPhone from 2018 or later to experience the latest update.

As the following chart shows, Apple has done a good job over the years of keeping older devices in the loop for a long time. While the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G received two major iOS updates, later models have typically gotten software updates for five to six years. Having been shipped with iOS 9, the iPhone 6s became the first generation to see a seventh iOS version, making it the technological equivalent of a tortoise outlasting generations of humans.iOS 17 Drops Support for iPhone 8 and X

Google's Search Dominance

Almost three years after the U.S. Department of Justice sued Google for anticompetitive behavior in the search market, the most significant antitrust trial against a tech company since the United States against Microsoft in 1998 is set to begin on Tuesday. In October 2020, the DOJ had filed a lawsuit against Google for “unlawfully maintaining a monopoly in general search services and search advertising in violation of the U.S. antitrust laws.” The suit, which the DOJ describes as “a monumental case for the Department of Justice and, more importantly, for the American consumer” in its official statement, accuses Google of being “a monopoly gatekeeper for the internet” engaging in “anticompetitive tactics to maintain and extend its monopolies”.

At the center of the case is Google’s well-known practice of paying large amounts of money to device manufacturers, wireless carriers and browser developers to make sure Google is the default search engine on devices and within browsers. According to the DOJ’s findings, such agreements cover almost 60 percent of all search queries in the United States, with a large part of the remaining share funneled through Google’s own properties (e.g. its Chrome browser and Google devices). As a result, Google has become “so dominant that “Google” is not only a noun to identify a company and the Google search engine but also a verb that means to search the internet,” the DOJ writes in its complaint.

As the following chart shows, Google’s dominance over the U.S. search market can in fact be described as monopolistic. According to Statcounter, a company tracking more than 5 billion pageviews across more than 1.5 million websites per month, Google’s market share in the U.S. currently amounts to 79 percent on desktop devices and more than 95 percent on mobile devices (excluding tablets). A dominant market position alone is not against the law, however, as the case's judge Amit P. Mehta pointed out in a statement last month. "A dominant firm like Google does not violate the law merely because it occupies a monopoly market position," Judge Mehta wrote. " It must act in a manner that produces anticompetitive effects in the defined markets. That is, a company with monopoly power acts unlawfully only when its conduct stifles competition."

This is precisely Google's argument, which maintains the position that its dominant market position is a result of the quality of its services and consumer preferences rather than of anticompetitive behavior. In a blog post published last week, the company dismisses the lawsuit as “deeply flawed”, stating that “people don't use Google because they have to - they use it because they want to." "Success doesn’t come from preloading," Google says with respect to the allegations at the heart of the case, "it comes from innovation and offering helpful products that people want to use."Google's Search Dominance

Pandemic Winners Struggle in the Post-Pandemic World

Zoom Video Communications, the company that rose to fame during the early days of the pandemic, reported better-than-expected results for its first fiscal quarter ended April 30, 2023. With total revenue of $1.11 billion and enterprise revenue of $630 million in the first quarter, Zoom raised its full-year guidance as well, expecting around 2 percent revenue growth for the year ending January 31, 2024. That’s obviously a far cry from the growth figures it posted during the pandemic, as the end of working-from-home requirements and stiff competition from Microsoft Teams, Cisco’s Webex and Salesforce’s Slack have brought the former pandemic high-flyer down to earth.

Zoom isn’t the only pandemic winner struggling to maintain its momentum in the post-pandemic world. Other companies that soared under the special circumstances created by Covid-19 have also come crashing down over the past year, as normal life gradually returned. Home fitness company Peloton and DIY marketplace Etsy, which profited from a large volume of mask sales on its platform during the pandemic, are two such examples, along with vaccine maker Moderna and DocuSign, a company that allows companies to manage agreements electronically.

As the following chart shows, all of these companies saw their stock price surge during the Covid crisis, but all of them have come down at least 70 percent from their peak pandemic valuation. $1,000 invested in Moderna shares on March 11, 2020, the day the WHO declared the Covid-19 outbreak a pandemic, would have appreciated to more than $20,000 by August 2021 and would still be worth more than $5,000 today. Investors who bought shares of DocuSign, Zoom or Peloton at the onset of the pandemic and held on to them until now are suffering from a severe pandemic hangover, as the shares of these companies are now worth (significantly) less than they were in March 2020.Pandemic Winners Struggle in the Post-Pandemic World

Tech Giants Were All About AI This Earnings Season

Google kicked off its annual developer conference I/O on Wednesday, unveiling two new Pixel smartphones and a revamped Pixel tablet intended to be a smart home hub. Aside from the hardware announcements, there was A LOT of AI talk in the opening keynote – it is 2023 after all. According to CNET, the term “AI” was mentioned more than 140 times during the roughly two-hour presentation, as Google didn’t shy away from letting the world know where its current focus was.

After having reportedly been caught on the wrong foot by the release of ChatGPT to the public, Google’s leadership issued a “Code Red” in response to the chatbot’s rapid rise in popularity late last year, as it saw its core search business under threat. The fact that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is working closely with Microsoft, one of Google’s main rivals in the search business, didn’t make things better for Google, and sure enough, Microsoft keeps bringing AI-powered features to its search engine Bing.

On Wednesday, Google unveiled its next-generation AI system PaLM 2, a “state-of-the-art language model”, which is “good at math, coding, reasoning, multilingual translation and natural language generation,” according to Zoubin Ghahramani, vice president at Google Deepmind. PaLM powers more than 25 products announced at I/O, including Bard, Google’s ChatGPT competitor, which will be rolled out to more than 180 countries after the trial period had been limited to the United States and the United Kingdom. Google also did its best to counter the idea that it had somehow fallen behind on AI, emphasizing its pioneering role in the industry over the past decade.

Ever since the launch of ChatGPT, AI has been making huge waves and the public can now witness firsthand how rapidly the technology is evolving. Tech companies such as Google’s parent Alphabet, Microsoft, and Meta have fully embraced the AI trend, talking up the capabilities and use cases of AI on every occasion. Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple collectively mentioned the term “AI” almost 200 times in their latest earnings calls, up sharply from less than 40 mentions a year ago. As the following chart illustrates, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft are much more involved in the AI craze than Amazon and Apple, which is understandable considering the different business models.Tech Giants Were All About AI This Earnings Season

Apple in the Smartphone Market

Win Where It Matters

Thanks to strong iPhone sales and its ever-growing services business, Apple reported better-than-expected results for its second fiscal quarter on Thursday. The company posted $24.2 billion in net profit on revenue of $94.8 billion for the three months ended April 1, 2023, beating expectations on the top and bottom line.

“We are pleased to report an all-time record in Services and a March quarter record for iPhone despite the challenging macroeconomic environment,” Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said, as the company’s services revenue climbed to $20.9 billion for the quarter. More importantly though, Apple defied headwinds in the smartphone market, reporting an admittedly modest increase in iPhone revenue in a quarter where global smartphone shipments declined by 14 percent year-over-year.

According to estimates from Counterpoint Research, Apple’s iPhone shipments were down 2 percent to 58 million in the past quarter, which was by far the smallest decline among the top five brands, with main rival Samsung seeing shipments drop by 19 percent year-over-year. “Apple outperformed the market due to several factors," Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint said, citing the stickiness of its ecosystem, users’ willingness to spend more for longer-lasting devices and its popularity among Gen Z consumers as key reasons for the company’s ability to “weather economic and other fluctuations better than its rivals while enjoying unflinching loyalty.”

In the past three months, that ability translated to a global market share of 21 percent for Apple, second only to Samsung. Looking beyond sheer volume yields an entirely different picture, however, as Apple is winning where it really matters. Thanks to its high average selling price and its healthy profit margins, Apple captured 50 percent of global smartphone revenues and more than 80 percent of the industry’s profits in the first three months of 2023.Apple in the Smartphone Market: Win Where It Matters
