Having established itself as an early leader in the market for cloud infrastructure, Amazon Web Services(AWS), the online retailer’s highly profitable cloud platform, is still ahead of the pack. According to estimates from Synergy Research Group, Amazon’s market share in the growing cloud infrastructure market amounted to 33 percent in the second quarter of 2019, more than double the combined market share of second- and third-place Microsoft and Google.
“Revenues from cloud infrastructure services have almost hit the $100 billion per year run rate, and there is no end in sight to strong growth”, Synergy writes, adding that while Amazon is still in the lead, Microsoft is giving the market leader a run for its money. “In early 2016 Microsoft was less than a quarter the size of Amazon in this market, while today it is getting close to being half the size.”
