Transitioning the highest emitting countries away from fossil fuels, in particular, coal—the world’s most dominant and most carbon-intensive source of energy—is crucial to a clean energy future. The World Bank is working with South Africa to help that country transition away from coal as part of the Climate Investment Funds’ Accelerating Coal Transition program, in partnership with the African Development Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC).
