Special issue on Unmet Need for Contraception and Unintended Pregnancy

CPDS, a scholarly peer-reviewed international journal which examines a broad range of topics related to population and development, announces a call for papers that will address the issues of unmet need for contraception and unintended pregnancy globally.

As reported by UNFPA in the State of World Population 2022, nearly half of all pregnancies, totalling 121 million each year throughout the world, are unintended. Over 60 per cent of unintended pregnancies end in abortion and an estimated 45 per cent of all abortions are unsafe, causing 5 – 13 per cent of all maternal deaths. Contraception is the most obvious way to prevent an unintended pregnancy. Yet, globally, around 257 million women who want to avoid pregnancy are not using safe, modern methods of contraception. And while all methods can fail or be used incorrectly, the biggest issue by far is people not being able to get the contraception that they need, when they need it. The unintended pregnancy and unmet need for contraception remains a serious public health issue both in developed and developing countries.

In this special issue, we are looking for papers on the theme of contraceptive use, unmet need for contraception and unintended pregnancy. The papers can be empirical, theoretical, commentary contributions; full length or short descriptive. We would like to invite submission of papers that address contraceptive use and pregnancy intention, including investigating the relationship between unmet need for contraception and unintended pregnancy, and identifying factors contributing to unmet need for contraception and unintended pregnancy. Comparative studies across countries, or between Asia and other regions, are encouraged.

We encourage you to consider submitting a 300-word abstract proposal to CPDS2017@163.com before 15 July 2022. The deadline for full paper submission is 15 November 2022. All submissions will undergo an initial screening and manuscripts that pass this stage will be sent out for external peer-review. We aim to complete the first round of the peer-review process within 8 weeks of submission. The special issue will be published in March 2023.
