Manchester City clinched their sixth Premier League title on Sunday after a final matchday that offered far more drama than many had anticipated. 69 minutes into its last game of the season, Pep Guardiola’s team suddenly found itself two goals down against Aston Villa, putting City’s title chase in serious doubt. It took an Ilkay Gündogan brace and a composed finish from Rodrigo within a manic five minutes to fend off Liverpool’s title challenge, who themselves left it late in their 3:1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
City’s latest triumph marks the club’s fourth title in the past five years and its sixth in both, the Premier League and the Abu Dhabi era. While Manchester City has dominated the Premier League over the past decade, local rival Manchester United has done so for large parts of the preceding two Premier League decades. The Red Devils have a record 13 Premier League titles to their name, but the last one came in 2013 – the final season under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The following chart shows which clubs have claimed the most titles since the Premier League’s foundation in 1992. Interestingly, the world’s most popular football (soccer) league has only seen seven different champions in 30 years of its existence.
