Ireland makes contraception free for the under 25s
The Irish Department of Health has confirmed that free contraception for young women will be made available in August, 2022.
Minister Stephen Donnelly said that it is envisaged the scheme, aimed at women aged 17-25, will cost between €18m to €22m per year.
It was announced last month that the contraceptive pill will be available to this age group for a nominal €1.50 prescription charge. The cost of fitting and removing long-term contraception such as implants will be free. Two doctor's consultations per year regarding contraception will also be free of charge for women in that age group.
This programme complements existing free contraception initiatives including the National Condom Distribution Service (NCDS).
