Winning Margins in U.S. Elections

As the U.S. election nears its final phase, projections for the electoral college and the swing states key to victory for both parties are becoming more prevalent. While there is still a lot to be decided, figures from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration show that the Democrats don't need to turn too many states back to blue to gain the crucial votes needed for victory.

Although at the time Trump claimed his win"was the biggest electoral college win since Ronald Reagan", his triumph was not as much of a landslide as he would have liked us to believe. In fact, he won fewer electoral votes than all but one president since Ronald Reagan: with 271 (2000) and 286 (2004) votes, George W. Bush was the only one to win by a smaller margin.
