Is Belarus considered a wealthy or poor country?

Wolfgang Maleck

By European, North American, or Australian standards, quite poor. Even if Ukraine, Moldavia, Albania, and the poorest parts of former Yugoslavia are even less affluent.

By world-wide standards, middle-income. About the same as what is typical in Latin America or Asia, ahead of most countries in Africa.

About rank 90 of about 180 countries, close to the median.

HOWEVER, Belarus has one of the lowest GINI-coefficients in the world, so few people, if any, go hungry. It is just a bad place to get rich.

Belarus is, at least under the present government, probably THE part of the former Soviet Union that continues the faults and merits of the USSR most closely. Not only economically.
