There are many ordinary things available in Russia that are forbidden / illegal in the US. Things like fireworks and patent medicines. Too many to enumerate, really, but one thing stands out - super low-quality cigarettes. Russians now have fancy Western cigarettes but many down and out people still smoke the classic ‘made for bums’ Russian cigarette - the Belomorkanal (Беломорканал) or simply ‘Belomorka’ [по-моему, просто Беломор, но нет даже слова папиросы, в идише и немецком? есть]. These lung-furnace sticks are wrapped in some kind of papyrus or newspaper and stuffed with God knows what and a pinch of 50-year-old tobacco. Named after the famous White Sea Canal where everyone died to build it, these death sticks keep up the Russian tradition of taunting death on a daily basis. Of course, such trash-in-a-wrapper could never be sold in the US, but here it is the comfort of those Russian patriots who need a smoke and can’t afford the real thing.
