Refugees

Turkey hosts the most refugees of any country worldwide with 3.7 million in total at the end of 2018, ahead of Pakistan (1.4 million) and Uganda (1.2 million). As a share of the population, however, Lebanon hosts the most by far with 156 per 1,000 of its inhabitants. Jordan comes second with 72 per 1,000 of its population while Turkey rounds off the top three with 45 per 1,000 of its people. Prior to the war in Syria, Lebanon only hosted 8,000 refugees and the huge influx has pushed its socio-economic absorption capacity to the very limit.

By the end of 2018, the number of people fleeing war, persecution and conflict exceeded 70 million according to the UNHCR, the highest level the UN's Refugee Agency has seen in nearly 70 years. At the end of last year, 57 percent of the world's refugees came from just three countries - Syria, Afghanistan and South Sudan.

According to a new report released by the UNHCR, the number of people fleeing war, persecution and conflict exceeded 70 million in 2018, the highest level that the organization has seen in its almost 70 years. The number of people forcibly displaced is double the level of 20 years ago and it corresponds to a population between that of Thailand and Turkey. The total is actually conservative because the crisis in Venezula is only partly reflected by the figure. According to the governments receiving them, at least 4 million Venezuelans have fled their country but it is thought that only half a million have formally applied for asylum.

Last year, the top-10 countries of origin accounted for 82 percent of all refugees while 57 percent came from three countries - Syria, Afghanistan and South Sudan. Even though the war in Syria has been winding down, it has like in previous years, been the main country of origin for refugees in 2018. 6.7 million were recorded late last year, an increase on 6.3 million a year earlier. Syria's refugees have a huge global footpint and are hosted by 127 countries but 85 percent of them have remained in the Middle East with Turkey hosting the largest population. Afghanistan came second last year with 2.7 million refugees while South Sudan came third with 2.3 million.
