WIESBADEN – A total of roughly 82.8 million people lived in Germany in 2017. To coincide with the Day of German Unity on 3 October, the Federal Statistical Office(Destatis) also reports that 16.2 million of them (19.5%) lived in the new Länder and Berlin, 66.6 million (80.5 %) lived in the former territory of the Federal Republic. In 1990, unified Germany had 79.8 million inhabitants, that was 3 million less. In 2017, about 5 million more people lived in western Germany than at the time of reunification (+8.2%). The number of inhabitants in eastern Germany and Berlin, however, was down by roughly 2 million (-11.0%) compared with 1990.
