The last Monday in May traditionally marks the Memorial Day in the United States, a federal holiday where the citizens remember their soldiers who died in service protecting the country. Whilst Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day, where the U.S. celebrates all its veterans, this chart nevertheless shows former soldiers – dead or alive – of all American conflicts as well as their relatives who are receiving reparations for their service. Even though the Civil War ended more than 150 years ago and its last soldier, Albert Woolson, died in 1956, there still is one woman left receiving Civil War pensions. Irene Triplett is the 86-year-old daughter of a Civil War veteran receiving $73.13 per month.
