There are only six countries in the world which offer full legal protections to women, according to the report Women, Business and the Law 2019, recently published by the World Bank. Belgium, France, Denmark, Latvia, Luxembourg and Sweden were the only ones offering full equal rights for men and women, at least from a legal perspective. 80 countries out of the world’s 194 ranked above 80 percent. Saudi-Arabia came in last with a score of 25.63 out of 100.
The United States ranked below countries like Colombia and Romania. It lost points because of a lack of laws guaranteeing equal pay and equal pensions, but mostly because of notoriously bad laws around parental leave. Here, the U.S. only scored 20 out of 100 index points and therefore placed behind almost everyone, except for countries offering no parental leave (Botswana, Brunei, Kuwait, Malaysia, Nepal, Qatar, Sierra Leone, the UAE and several Caribbean and Pacific island nations).
