Every year since 1996 The Lancet has invited readers to submit essays for our annual Wakley Prize Essay. The prize is awarded for the best essay on any topic of health importance and is open to anyone working in a health-related field. We always look for provocative originality and fine writing that engages both our hearts and minds. Over the years we have published a rich selection of winning essays (see collection).

....

All the winning essays show how the discursive and intimate form of the essay remains a powerful way to tell clinical truths that inform, engage, and entertain readers. Always truthful, always unexpected we hope this collection will encourage you to enter this year’s Wakley Prize Essay competition.
