We Put a Transgender Girl on the Cover of National Geographic

Lots of people are talking about Avery Jackson, a nine-year-old girl from Kansas City who is the first transgender person to appear on the cover of National Geographic.

We published an issue focused on gender at a time when beliefs about gender are rapidly shifting.

The new National Geographic documentary "Gender Revolution" takes viewers across the U.S. and to other parts of the world to explore the evolving concept of gender. Former TODAY anchor Katie Couric narrates the film and provides the audience with a newcomer's lens to the complex -- and at times polarizing -- topic.
