UK Research Excellence Framework Highlights Quality of PLOS Research

The UK produces a significant percentage of the world’s most influential research, and according to analysis of the UK’s 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), scientists in the UK regard their PLOS articles among their best work.

All PLOS articles submitted by universities to the UK REF reflect high-quality output from UK researchers. Papers submitted report substantial insights across a wide range of disciplines, including new understanding of disease processes, clinical insight or important basic scientific research.

Altogether, UK researchers submitted 2,403 unique PLOS articles. PLOS is the only Open Access publisher with a journal, PLOS ONE, to be ranked among the top 10 biomedical science journals by total number of articles submitted. Overall, it was the journal with the second highest number of articles submitted among biomedical science journals.

Editorial Director for PLOS ONE Damian Pattinson says, “Meaningful work is published in many places and the impact of each study cannot be dictated by the title of the journal in which it appears.”

That so many submissions to the REF were published in Open Access journals, including PLOS journals, shows that UK researchers believe articles they publish in Open Access journals are some of their best work.
